HAIR COUNT

Contrary to popular misconception, not every kind and type of hair loss should be considered as a drastic condition. Each and every one of us loses many strands of our hair everyday. However, it should be noted that if the amount of hair that you shed on a regular basis significantly increases suddenly, then you should be wary of the fact that you might be suffering from a hair loss condition.

Furthermore, if you notice that the hair at your temples starts thinning and if your hairline considerably recedes as you age, then you might be in the early stages of a pattern baldness condition.

Keeping track of our day to day hair loss is a bit difficult, especially among very busy people. However, such is important especially for people who are quite conscious of their physical appearance. This is because early diagnosis of a hair loss condition equates to early hair loss treatment and possible cure.

Fortunately, a recent scientific report noted that people who think that they are experiencing balding can now perform a standardized 60-second hair count. According to hair experts, this method appears to be a reliable way for evaluating the amount of hair that a person sheds on a regular basis.

USUAL METHODS FOR DIAGNOSING HAIR LOSS

There are many methods that doctors use in diagnosing hair loss conditions. The most common of which is a pull test. In this method, the doctor will try to determine the amount of hair that you can easily lose. As implied by its name, the process involves pulling of the hair. A pile of your hair strands will be pulled and then the hair strands that fall out are counted.

In case an accurate assessment cannot be made through the findings from the full test, skin scrapings will be made. In this process, the doctor will take samples of your scalp where a few strands of your hair strands are attached. Such method is important in determining if the hair loss condition is caused by a skin infection. If a skin scraping is not enough, the dermatologist might need to conduct a punch biopsy. This process requires the use of a circular medical device. This will be used to remove a section of your scalp’s deep layers.

A NEW METHOD - THE 60-SECOND HAIR COUNT

In addition to the usual methods that dermatologists conduct in order to determine if a person has a hair loss condition, a new method – the 60-second hair count – is now being introduced.

Researchers headed by Dr. Carina A. Wasko from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston conducted a study of hair loss among two groups of healthy male respondents that manifested no signs of alopecia. The first group was composed of men with ages between 20 and forty while the second group was comprised of older men with ages within the range of 41 to 60.

In the study, researchers then instructed them to wash their hair for three consecutive mornings, using the same brand of shampoo. On the fourth day, the researchers then asked the participants to comb their hair forward for 60 seconds prior to shampooing. They were asked to use identical combs.

To make sure that the amount of hair shedding can be easily monitored, towels of contrasting colors were used. After combing their hair over the towel, the participants then counted the number of hair strands that they shed for three consecutive days.

The same procedure is then repeated six months later. According to Dr. Wasko, “those in the younger age group shed 0 to 78 hairs, with an average loss of 10.2 hairs per 60-second test while men age 41 to 60 shed 0 to 43 hairs, with an average loss of 10.3 hairs per 60-second.”
