HAIR LOSS - AN OVERVIEW

HAIR LOSS

Hair loss has been the subject of scrutiny and bad humor for a long time now. Images of bald, aging men often disturb the surface of political-correctness. With all the bad press that hair loss has been getting these past few years, men and women alike are finally responding to the call for renewing or replacing hair.

HAIR LOSS IN MEN

When we speak of hair loss, we’re not only talking about a generalized condition that may or may not afflict some members of the community. We’re talking about a generally genetic predisposition to hair loss that can be aggravated by stress, a polluted environment or even bad office relations.

Contrary to some speculation within the medical community, men do have a worse time of it. Did you know that more than half of all men in their ‘golden years’ experience at least some amount of hair loss? This means that even if a person has not been proven to be genetically predisposed to hair loss, he may already be suffering from it due to other extrinsic factors.

HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN TOO!

If men are more genetically predisposed to hormonal imbalances that shed off the hair in clumps on a daily basis, let it be said that women are no better off than the men.

Hair loss for women is like a curse, because society expects women to at least have a full head of hair. However, in the United States alone, at least twenty million females experience balding. Usually, the balding is due also to hormone levels. In some cases, younger women experience hair fall due to tight braids.

All these factors come together to form a picture of how big the problem is: baldness is as real as it can get, and people are bothered by its presence.

OTC HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS

To combat the onslaught of increased hair loss and balding, men and women alike have flocked to health stores and drug stores for OTC or over-the-counter products. Since the early nineties, the market has been deluged with different approaches to treating baldness (or its symptoms). Most of these products are bogus, or are inadequate in addressing the needs of the majority of hair loss-sufferers.

Millions of folks with thinning hair have placed their faith in OTC remedies, many of which had evaded strict FDA regulation by declaring themselves “food supplements” or “herbal supplements”. But the fact remains: these are quite frankly, expensive ways of treating a problem that many do not understand completely.

HAIR TRANSPLANTS

While many people place faith in herbal supplements and patches, around a hundred thousand other folks place faith in hair transplantation. Expensive as it may sound, hair transplants are one of the semi-permanent options for people who want to physically intervene with balding.

While success rates vary from one place to another, the recent developments in medical science has allowed for this routine medical procedure to improve vastly. With the use of laser technology and improved anesthetic techniques, people can expect quite a lot from hair transplants nowadays. However, transplants are still quite expensive and really appear to be investments if you look at the price tags.
