Hair Loss Treatment for Men & Women 2010

HOW DOES HAIR SURGERY WORK?

Hair loss is fast becoming one of the mainstays of aesthetic and plastic surgery centers around the world. Since a full head of hair has the same value as a well toned set of abdominal muscles, people are spending thousands of dollars to re-invest in their fading mane.

HAIR TRANSPLANTATION

Hair transplantation involves the actual transplantation of hair strands on specific regions of the scalp. Such a procedure increases the thickness of hair per square inch, which is responsible for giving the impression of a “full head of hair”.

Most patients only have a full head of hair of three or four consecutive procedures. Each procedure can cost between $2500 and $4000 depending on who’s doing the procedure.

For those who are hoping that insurance will cover hair replacement, the answer is an unfortunate no. Insurance does not cover hair replacement surgery- so you have to face the bill alone on this one.

This is the grafting procedure that is most commonly used by doctors everywhere. The surgery involves the “shooting” of distinct “hair plugs” into specific regions of the scalp.

According to Dr. David Green, a dermatologist located in Washington, states the importance of quality surgery:

"If done properly, you should not be able to tell that anything was done. If you can, it obviously wasn't a good job. I think the vast majority of transplants are not done properly."

According to the Felicia Tentirio of the FDA, finding “good help” is also vital:

"Find someone who has a lot of experience. That will give you a little more comfort in knowing he does cosmetic procedures. Hopefully, that doctor will have a background in cosmetic surgery, dermatology or plastic surgery."

OTHER PROCEDURES

Back in the nineties, there were many reported cases of painful, bleeding “hair plugs” that hurt the patients for more than a week. Typically, a person’s scalp should only hurt for three or four days.

After the swelling and the minor bleeding subsides, the person can have the bandages removed and a hat can be put in its place. After a more normal head of hair has been achieved, the hat can be removed permanently and the hair can be styled as one wishes.

HOW TO GET THE BEST SERVICE?

Dr. Green recommends that a “double-check” can be carried out by communicating with institutions such as the American Academy of Dermatology. You can also contact the American College of Plastic Surgeons to check whether a person has no outstanding lawsuits, and has performed well in his or her field.

If you think you’ve been had with your own surgery, you may contact these organizations for the proper course of action. Always be on the look out for false “plastic surgeons” that may look the part and act the part, but are not really plastic surgeons.

Advertisements on magazines or newspapers are not a good barometer of a person’s capacity to operate on the human body. If you can, acquire the opinion of others who have gone under the knife with the same doctor or team of doctors.

Be careful also of cheap offers from other countries - because if the surgery does not go well, you might suffer from other maladies afterward.
