Hair transplantation technique has significantly changed over the previous decade that every aspect of it has had huge improvements.

 

 

NEW TECHNIQUES

 

During hair transplantation, hair is taken from the sides or back of a person’s head and is transferred to his/her area with hair loss. Donor hair are usually reaped and transplanted in huge bunches of about 10 to 20 hairs. But with the new techniques, surgeons now transplant smaller bundles of about 3 to four hairs.

 

Surgeons doing hair transplantation utilize instruments that look like cutters of cookies. These instruments are called punches. They are used in making round incisions in the patient’s head. But today, surgeons take hair from the donor in tiny strips. Afterwards, they separate the hair into smaller follicular units, which are transplanted in the recipient’s scalp using tiny needles.

 

This most commonly used transplant approach is also called follicular unit transplantation. However, some surgeons make use of the follicular unit extraction technique. In the latter, a punch measuring one millimeter, is used to harvest and transplant the hair. Such approach is most suitable for individuals who require immediate resumption of their normal activity right after the surgery or those with only some degree of hair loss.

 

 

RECOVERY

 

Hair transplantation does not require hospital admission as it is done as an outpatient surgery. Hair transplantation typically requires at least two sessions. With such surgery, a thin scar is expected. But this scar can be covered by an inch of hair. Strenuous activities should be avoided within the first 48 hours after surgery. Also, prolonged exposure to sunlight must be avoided for the first month after hair transplantation.

 

Scabs may initially develop on the transplanted area, and may last for about 14 days. However, within four weeks, the hair transplanted may fall out to give way to the growth of new hair. The growth of new hair usually begins within four months. More transplants may be required for individuals who still experience further hair loss.

Surgeons who do hair transplantation may come from different medical backgrounds. Some are former plastic surgeons or dermatologists. Whatever their medical backgrounds may be, they must be open about it. You can also check the surgeon’s credentials or meet some of his/her patients and check on the hair transplantation that he/she has done to them. With the right surgeon and the new hair transplantation techniques, you will most likely have a bald-free head that you can be proud of.
