Hair Loss Treatment for Men & Women 2010
Androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition. This hair loss genetic trait can be inherited from either side of the family. It is also quite prevalent for both men and women. However, this condition significantly progresses when it afflicts men. Contrary to alopecia incidences among women, this pattern baldness can promote total baldness among men. As for the women, they usually end up having thinning hair. If the hair loss condition of a person is hereditary, hair thinning and receding hair lines usually start during the teenage years but the condition only becomes significantly noticeable as the person reaches the age of thirty.
Aside from hereditary hair loss however, other forms of balding may occur. Another popular hair loss condition is “Telogen effluvium”. This balding condition occurs as a side effect of many diseases and medical conditions. This can be caused by high fever, severe infections, thyroid diseases, and iron deficiency. Rapid weight loss and surgical procedures can also cause this hair loss condition.
Aside from telogen effluvium and androgentic alopecia, there are also other kinds of hair loss which may be caused by skin infections (particularly ringworm in the scalp), improper hygiene which may cause severe dandruff, alopecia areata or “localized patchy hair loss”, and radiation hair loss or hair loss caused by radiation treatments. Basically, if your hair loss condition is temporary, then your dermatologist might recommend some lifestyle changes, medication alternatives, and the use of Minoxidil or Finasteride. However, if you are already in the advanced stage of balding, dermatologists might recommend the use of some surgical treatments.
SURGERY & HAIR LOSS
For those who have permanent or hereditary types of alopecia, surgical procedures
might be used to promote hair re-
Recent innovations in the field of hair transplantation include the use of Micrografts and minigrafts. In this process, only one or two hair strands are transplanted with each graft. In each transplantation session however, the number of the hair grafts may range from a hundred to a thousand, depending on the balding area. Using this technique, the process will yield a more natural looking hair line.
Another surgical treatment is the scalp reduction process. In this procedure, the balding portions of the scalp are removed while the healthy areas are “extended” or “stretched”. However, there are cases when the scalp is too tight for such procedure. If this is the case, the surgeon might opt to conduct a tissue expansion process first. In addition to these popular surgical treatments, new procedures such as the use of fiber implants and tunnel grafts are being introduced. However, such procedures have not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
