RESEARCHERS DISCOVER BLOOD VESSELS PROMOTE THICKER HAIR GROWTH

To find a possible cure for alopecia, dermatologist and scientists have been on the continuous lookout for possible hair cycle processes that might bring a halt to a progressive hair loss condition. One of the many possibilities that they are looking at is the promotion of thicker hair growth. According to a study conducted at Massachusetts, there is a protein that is responsible for the promotion of thicker hair growth.

DETAILS OF THE STUDY

Earlier scientific studies have shown that most people who have hair loss conditions have fewer blood vessels. However, none of the earlier researches measured exactly how blood vessel growth is linked to thicker hair growth. There is also no study that focused on how blood vessels on the scalp grow.

To determine the direct relation between scalp blood vessels and thicker hair growth, researchers from the Department of dermatology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) compared two groups of mice – the first group was composed of normal mice, while the other group was comprised of special mice that were genetically predisposed to have high VEGF levels. The VEGF refers to those protein molecules that trigger the growth of blood vessels.

RESULTS OF THE STUDY

At the end of the study, the researchers concluded that the mouse hair follicles that grew on the VEGF group of mice were significantly bigger that those which grew on the normal group. The study, which was published on the Journal of Clinical Investigation, also showed that the total hair volume increased by as much as seventy percent. The researchers also said that the mice that were VEGF-enhanced also grew hair faster and thicker during the first two weeks of the experiment.

In addition to that, the mice from the VEGF group also regrew hair at a faster rate. According to the researchers, the eight-week old VEGF mice which were shaved not just grew their hair sooner, a 30-percent increase in the hair follicle diameter was also observed 12 days just after the depilation period. According to Dr. Michael Detmar, associate professor of dermatology at MGH and lead author of the research, the hair that re-grew among the VEGF- induced mice were seventy percent thicker than those which grew from wild type mice.

They noted that the thicker hair growth was probably caused by the larger blood vessels that also developed among the VEGF mice. Dr. Detmar also noted that blood vessels in the skin that surrounded the hair follicles were “40% larger in diameter than those found in normal mice”. This suggests that VEGF-mediated angiogenesis was responsible for the faster and thicker hair re-growth.

The doctors further noted that when the untreated mice were injected with antibodies that blocked VEGF activity, they experienced slower hair re-growth when they were shaved. The mice also had thinner hair as compared to those that grew on the other untreated mice and those who belonged to the VEGF group.

Twelve days after the depilation period, the mice that were injected with antibodies still had bald patches. They also experienced overall reduced hair re-growth. As such, Dr. Detmar concludes that “by modulating VEGF, we can directly influence the size of the hair.
