STRESS & HAIR LOSS

While it is true that genetics plays a crucial and central role in the determination and manifestation of hair loss, there are some instances that it is not the case.

Statistics show that there are some cases that balding individuals have stress to blame. Alopecia becomes the direct consequence of prolonged engagements with environment stressors.

TYPES OF STRESS THAT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO HAIR LOSS

If you’re an adult, chances are you already have a stressful life. While many people can mentally adapt to prolonged bouts with stress at work and stress at home, the body does not adapt in the same manner.

While mentally people can feel stronger when they adapt to environmental stressors, the body often recoils. The ‘recoiling’ mechanism often involves hair loss.

According to medical science, there are three main types of stress. There is “acute stress”, “episodic stress” and “chronic stress”. All three are capable of producing chemical imbalances in the human brain and in the bloodstream.

AVOIDANCE OF STRESS

To preserve your mane, it’s better to do something to minimize the sources of stress. Stress related to work and home should be altered significantly.

According to Gary Young, M.D. of the New York University Medical Center:

“Acute stress can cause the entire body to have an immediate reaction and is often linked to a variety of life of situations—an argument, a minor traffic accident or an approaching deadline. Episodic stress is an extreme form of acute stress related to time management and anxiety.”

“Chronic stress, aka "long term" stress, affects the entire health system and can lead to degenerative and inflammatory conditions like heart attacks, arteriosclerosis, strokes and cancer.”

The American Academy of Family Physicians or AAFP recommends:

“[We recommend] meditation, daily exercises, well-balanced meals, plenty of rest, exercise, and a more relaxed and conflict-free life.”

ALOPECIA

In case you are suffering from androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata or central centrifugal scarring alopecia, it’s time to act. If the hair loss is due to hair care products and not stress, such practice should be stopped immediately.

A dermatologist would be able to tell you whether your hair loss would be a temporary occurrence or a permanent occurrence. In any case, the proper recommendations would probably be given after a consultation.

Also, doctors can choose to inject or apply topical corticosteroids to remedy the inflammation of hair follicles.

Another option for the treatment of hair loss is hormone replacement. Since fluctuations in hormone levels is often to blame for gradual hair loss as one ages, estrogen or testosterone may be injected on a regular basis to stabilize bloodstream hormones.

B-vitamins may also be used to counter androgens or male hormones. Male hormones are detrimental to hair growth in women, so you have this option if you don’t want to partake of hormone replacement therapy.

Finally, you can invest in hairpieces. Hairpieces are quite expensive (the least expensive cost around $1,000). In any case, wigs do not have side effects, and all you have to do is to keep the wig clean and free of insects and parasites.
