Hair Loss Treatment for Men & Women 2010

TESTING OF ANOTHER POSSIBLE HAIR LOSS REMEDY

Hair loss is no joking matter. While it is true that hair is not a good measurement of a person’s ability to work or get along with people, it directly projects an image that is negative.

This is why people around the world are battling the scourge known as balding. Medical science, given impetus by the demand for better and more efficient hair loss treatments has recognized the value of research and development in this particular area.

As early as the nineties, sizeable research had already been undertaken by outfits such as Upjohn to produce OTC or over-the-counter remedies to hair loss.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND HAIR LOSS

While it has been a generally accepted fact that 95% of the time, heredity is the culprit for receding hairlines and bald spots, just what is causing the anomaly?

In males, the condition is called “androgenetic alopecia”. Fifty percent of all men experience this kind of male-patterned hair loss, and there is little that can be done to completely counter the genetics behind it.

But then again, science never says “I quit!”. Now, more than ever does it want to explore the intricacies of hair loss and hair growth. The problem chemical has already been isolated as the enzyme known as type II 5 alpha reductase.

What’s the problem then? Men who have too much of this enzyme in their scalp suffer from hair loss. Men who don’t have any of it, don’t suffer from receding hairlines. That’s how relevant it is in the battle against baldness.

TESTING OF ANOTHER POSSIBLE HAIR LOSS REMEDY

Minoxidil has been proven mildly effective in re-growing hair. But some other chemical had been showing promise. According to Keith Kaufman of Merck Research Laboratories:

“Some guinea pigs from a total sample of 1,553 received 1mg of finasteride, a drug that reduced DHT levels; others were given placebos. The regrowth of hair was measured by hair count and

examination of hair density, ratings of photographs by an expert panel, as well as by patient self-assessment.”

Kaufman continues with:

“We found that five out of six men treated with finasteride maintained the amount of hair in the vertex area (83 per cent versus 28 per cent placebo); and during the second year of treatment, two out of three men actually regrew hair that visibly increased the coverage of their scalps. Better still: the length and diameter of existing hair also increased significantly.”

FINASTERIDE

If you don’t like minoxidil, you can try finasteride-based medications. However, some reminders before you buy your first batch of finasteride medication.

The amount of time estimated before any visible effects can be seen will be about six months. That’s right- half a year before you see anything happen.

According to Keith Maynard, a dermatologist from Indiana:

“Hair re-growth is never an easy task. There are just too many components to take consideration of, and just one chemical treatment is not sufficient to speed up the process.”
