Hair Loss Treatment for Men & Women 2010

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN HAIR COLORING & HAIR LOSS

For the longest time, hair coloring has been blamed from the occurrence of hair loss to the occurrence of cancer. In our age of paranoia, it’s time to set the facts straight regarding the most common hair treatment being done around the world.

THE FACTS

According to Dr. Philip Kingsley, a clinician in London:

“During my many years of practice in my London and New York clinics, I have never been able to associate hair loss with coloring. I did an eight-month study involving 30 women and three men, who all underwent various types of hair coloring and none showed signs of extra hair loss. A bad color job, however, can cause hair breakage, which may be confused with extra hair loss.”

It seems that there is no clear connection between hair coloring and hair loss. What can cause hair loss on the other hand, is the use of low quality coloring agents and too much heat during hair treatments.

When this happens, the hair will naturally take damage and break. In some instances, the breakage will be so manifest that visible thin spots can already be seen. A rule of thumb would be to use only reputable hair coloring products and don’t be too adventurous when it comes to trying out new products.

SOME MYTHS

There are some myths regarding hair coloring, including toxicity during pregnancy. Dr. Bryant Decker, a hair loss specialist in Florida, clears the subject about cancer and pregnancy scares:

“All women want to look their best when they're pregnant and what better way to boost morale than to have your hair the way you want. There are recurring scares about hair colorings causing bladder cancer.”

“The first was about 25 years ago and the latest in 2002. There were some studies that indicated a link, but none could be substantiated on humans.”

“Each study was similar: the hair of mice was shaved daily and hair color applied to their skin. After three months (100 applications), most of the mice had bladder cancer. I think it is unreasonable to base a link on this method of testing, as daily applications on shaved skin would seriously affect absorption rates.”

SOME ALTERNATIVES

If you want to avoid chemicals like peroxide and ammonia, there are some alternatives. There are many hair-coloring agents today that utilize henna or chamomile. While these hair-coloring agents are not as permanent as synthetic colorants, they are relatively safe to use and have less myths and risks associated with them.

If you can, you may consult with hair doctors or trichotological clinics for your hair problems. These institutions are often more equipped with dealing with most maladies, such as chemical damage due to salon procedures and the like.

Often, hair breakage and hair loss due to chemicals can easily be remedied by stopping the use of the offending chemicals. In some instances, the hair might have been damaged too much - in this case, multivitamin and medicated shampoos might be used to repair the damaged hair.

Avoidance of hair treatments for a while might give chemical-damaged hair its much needed rest.
