Learning More About Hair Transplantation
Alopecia areata is among the list of the most popular forms of temporary hair loss these days. Although the cause of this condition has not been defined yet, the symptoms are quite obvious. When a person has alopecia areata, clumps of hair will fall out. In addition to that, small, round and smooth bald patches in the scalp can be observed. As such, the person should immediately seek medical advice. Various treatments may be provided, primarily the use of various medications.
Unfortunately, a recent study noted that the present set of treatment and medications offered for the treatment of alopecia areata are not reliable. The said review examined seventeen randomized controlled trials that assessed the efficiency of various treatments for this condition.
THE BASICS OF THE DISEASE
Alopecia areata is very common. Based on the recent medical surveys, one in every fifty visits to the dermatologists are about this kind of hair loss condition. In addition to that, another study notes that about 1.7 % of people around the globe will develop alopecia areata at some point in their lives.
Dermatologists note that determining and diagnosing the development of alopecia areata at an early age is very important. They point out that the condition will cause the appearance of patchy hair loss. This means that hair, not just in the scalp but also in some other parts of the body will fall out.
Many of those who are affected by this condition develop some bald patches during their teenage years. Before the hair loss condition affects many parts of the body, the condition should be treated. When treated immediately, alopecia areata can be cured. However, the hair loss condition may return.
Based on the results of some medical researches, alopecia areata is caused by an immune system disorder. This happens when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles and disrupts the natural hair growth cycle. In some cases however, they note that emotional and physical stress can also trigger the onset of this condition.
THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY

The review evaluated studies which involved 540 patients that were diagnosed with alopecia areata. The seventeen studies were composed of clinical trials on topical and oral corticosteroids, and topical cyclosporine. These drugs work by “dampening” the immune system so it would stop attacking the hair follicles. Some researches also looked at the use of topical minoxidil, as well as photodynamic therapy. This “light exposure” therapy is a recent addition to the popular alopecia treatments used these days.
