TREATMENT FOR THINNING HAIR AND MASSIVE HAIR LOSS

TREATMENT FOR HAIR LOSS

Some people have learned to live with hair loss, avoiding it during conversations and refusing to think about it. But some choose to do something about it and find ways to solve it.

If you are experiencing hair loss right now, it is important to take action right away. The first step is to find out the cause. If it is caused by illness, medication, infection, stress or poor nutrition, it is often temporary. If you can address the cause, your hair will usually grow back. Read The 5 Causes of Hair Loss.

For hair loss caused by male or female pattern baldness, there is no cure. However, these are the treatments available to delay the process.

TREATMENT FOR THINNING HAIR

1. Minoxidil

This is an over-the-counter topical lotion available in a 2% regular and 5% extra strength version which promotes hair growth in both men and women. It is rubbed into the scalp where there is still remaining hair.

It works best on top and on the crown than on the frontal region (where men are usually bothered with baldness). The twice a day application is somewhat tiring, and this is the usual problem that is experienced in using this solution. Other side effects include itchiness and dandruff.

2. Finasteride

This is prescribed for men only. It’s an oral pill which blocks the male hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) - the hormone is associated with thinning hair. There may be a side effect of impotence, but only .05% of men experience this. And it is reversible when it is stopped.

This drug requires a prescription and is taken once a day. Though it is easier to pop in a daily pill rather than applying a lotion twice daily, some men are not comfortable with the prospect of doing it everyday for the rest of their lives.

It is important to note that these two drugs should be used in the entire lifetime of the patient. If it is stopped, hair growth will stop. These are the only ones approved by the FDA to treat thinning hair. Others may prove to be effective, but they are not specifically approved for hair loss.

TREATMENT FOR MASSIVE HAIR LOSS

1. Wigs/Hairpieces

Cosmetically adding an artificial or human hair may be a temporary solution. You can choose from the various color and texture that will suit you.

2. Hair Transplant/Surgery

This means taking hair from the back and transplanting it in the bald areas. If it is done well, it can appear very natural and appealing. Checking and verifying the skill and credential of the doctor is critical in this approach.

This is the golden rule: the earlier you treat it, the better your result will be. Decide today what remedy is best for you. But do not decide alone and fall into the trap of self-medication. Go out and consult your doctor so you can have a very informative decision. Who knows, maybe you can stop losing more hair or better yet, restore the hair that was once lost.
